Clinton's Comments Denying an Affair

MR. LEHRER The news of this day is that Kenneth Starr, independent counsel, is investigating allegations that you suborned perjury by encouraging a 24-year-old woman, former White House intern, to lie under oath in a civil deposition about her having had an affair with you. Mr. President, is that true?

MR. CLINTON That is not true. That is not true. I did not ask anyone to tell anything other than the truth. There is no improper relationship. And I intend to cooperate with this inquiry. But that is not true.

The New York Times reports on the unusual route that Arkansas businessman Tom Bhakta's presidential pardon took.

As Bhakta began his quest for a pardon in October of 2000, he, his wife, and each of his three college-age children all donated $1,000 apiece to the campaign of a certain candidate running for the U.S. Senate seat from New York.  This would seem odd, considering that Bhakta is from Arkansas, and up to that point had not been a significant political campaign donor.

Bhakta's pardon request fully bypassed the normal FBI/prosecutor/Justice Department review, and was signed by President Bill Clinton on his last day in office.  The Times reported that due to the hurried nature of his pardon approval, Mr. Bhakta's name was even misspelled on the executive order signed by President Clinton.

"In the gentleman's words, we face a lot of evil men. And what in my background equips me to deal with evil and bad men?"

The Washington Post described her as delivering the line "wryly", eliciting laughter from the audience.

The Senator later denied that she was referring to her husband, but instead to politicians in general.

10th Anniversary of "I Did Not Have Sexual Relations..."

"But I want to say one thing to the American people. I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again: I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time. Never. These allegations are false."

"That allegation is false"

Presidential candidate Bill Clinton’s response when questioned on "60 Minutes" in January 1992, as to whether he had an affair with Gennifer Flowers.

Six years later, in testimony under oath as part of the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit, Bill Clinton admitted that he had in fact had an affair with Gennifer Flowers.

Hillary, Put Down the Karaoke Mic!

January 2007- shortly after beginning her presidential campaign, MSNBC managed to zero its microphones on Sen. Hillary Clinton as she joined the crowd in singing the Star-Spangled Banner.  Her lack of singing ability went on to cause a stir on the internet after the video was posted on YouTube, where it quickly became one of the most-watched videos.

Hillary Clinton Makes History!

In January, 1996, Hillary Clinton made history as the first First Lady to be required to testify before a criminal grand jury.

Hillary Clinton was subpoenaed to testify regarding the discovery of legal records in the Clinton's private portion of the White House.  The records in question had been requested by prosecutors a few years earlier, but the Clintons did not produce them, claiming their whereabouts to be unknown.

1993- Hillary's Brothers' Inaugural Bash

January 1993-  The Wall Street Journal reports that Hillary Clinton's two brothers were planning their own inauguration party, and that their representative had been in touch with Ford Motor Co., Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp. soliciting corporate donations to cover the party's costs.  Although the brothers' representative made no promises that President-Elect Clinton or his wife, Hillary, would attend the party, the request for contributions was solicited "on behalf of the family" of Hillary Clinton.

Clinton Accepts Revocation of Law License

"Today, I signed a consent order in the lawsuit brought by the Arkansas Committee on Professional Conduct which brings to an end that proceeding.

I have accepted a five-year suspension of my law license, agreed to pay a $25,000 fine to cover counsel fees, and acknowledged a violation of one of the Arkansas model rules of professional conduct because of testimony in my Paula Jones case deposition. The disbarment suit will now be dismissed.

I have had occasion frequently to reflect on the Jones case. In this consent order, I acknowledge having knowingly violated Judge Wright's discovery orders in my deposition in that case. I tried to walk a fine line between acting lawfully and testifying falsely, but I now recognize that I did not fully accomplish this goal and that certain of my responses to questions about Ms. Lewinsky were false."

The Associated Press reports that First Lady and candidate for U.S. Senator from New York Hillary Clinton won rave reviews for her appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman".

Showing a great sense of humor with several well-executed jokes, Mrs. Clinton, who had only recently bought a house in New York, overcame the image of a carpetbagger by correctly answering all questions on a New York State quiz proctored by Letterman.

The Clinton Administration announced that a check in the amount of $850,000 had been sent to Paula Corbin Jones as required in the terms of the settlement reached in November 1998 relating to her sexual harassment case.

Ms. Jones had claimed that, while she was an employee of the state of Arkansas, then-Governor Clinton had made sexual advances on her in a Little Rock hotel room.  Her suit alleged that in retaliation for refusing his advances, Bill Clinton had used his powers as Governor to ruin her career with the state.
